Stephenville Billing Clerk Experiences Inner Workings of Co-op Machinery as Assistant CEO of the Week.
by DEBBY PHINNEY
My name is Debby Phinney, and I have worked for two years as a billing clerk at United Cooperative Services in the Stephenville office.
Even though I have worked at United for a small fraction of time compared to many of my coworkers, I have felt part of the team from day one.
My husband and I have lived in Texas for a little more than three years, and I knew moving to another state would bring big changes in many ways. Besides moving away from family and friends, I was leaving a company that had employed me for 12 years. It was important to me that I found a job I enjoyed at a company that made me proud. I am so thankful to have found that experience with United Cooperative Services.
Like other employees who came before me, I was nervous prior to my time as United’s Assistant CEO of the Week. Everyone I encountered was great, and the experience reminded me several times what a small world it really is. Working in billing, I don’t get many chances to visit the other offices, and my experience gave me an opportunity to finally put a face with some of the people I communicate with regularly.
One concept that resonated the entire week was the idea of “members first.” We all have different roles within the cooperative, but our common goal is to do what is best for our members. I could tell that is the first thing on everyone’s minds. I appreciated the opportunity to see how other departments operate and learn of ways they are working to help make things easier and run a little smoother while looking toward the future of our membership and United.
I am a “why” person, so I appreciated getting the chance to see how the duties of one department impact another and see the “why” that explains what others work on daily. So much goes on in each department, and many of us might not realize it unless we have a part in it. I learned there is a wealth of knowledge within the employees of United, and everyone brings their own strengths. To see how that comes together and builds the great cooperative that we are was rewarding for me.
Sitting in on the board meeting was another highlight. I enjoyed spending time getting to know the board members and seeing first-hand the care they have for the members and employees and the consideration they take with everything presented to them. With everything constantly evolving and growing in today’s world, it can’t be easy.
This week has reinforced in my mind that I am blessed to work with an exceptional group of people. When Cameron asked me if I saw myself staying with United long term, how could I answer anything but, “Most definitely.”
I’d like to say thank you to Cameron, the staff, the board of directors, and everyone that I had the privilege of sitting with during my time as Assistant CEO. Even though I started off the week anxious and nervous (to be honest it started before that week), I am extremely thankful for the opportunity.
